The race to achieve the highest scalability and most compatibility among Ethereum-compatible Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) blockchains has intensified over the past few days. Leaders of the zk-compatible blockchains Polygon zkEVM, zkSync Era, and Scroll have recently butted heads over the merits of their projects on Twitter.

Polygon Zero Co-Founder Brendan Farmer and zkSync creator Matter Labs Co-Founder and CEO Alex Gluchowski discussed gas costs and relative efficiency. Daniel Lubarov, from the same Polygon Zero team, then published an article comparing Polygon zkEVM to zkSync Era in terms of performance, security, and EVM compatibility. Gluchowski took issue with Lubarov's analysis, claiming it to be extremely biased and lacking in impartiality.

Toghrul Maharramov, Senior Researcher of Scroll and Farmer discussed the discrepancies between EVM-compatibility and EVM-equivalence on Twitter. Polygon Labs President Ryan Watt then posted on the need for more collaborative thinking and Sandy Peng, Co-Founder of Scroll showed support for Polygon's achievements in product and marketing. Scroll Co-Founder Ye Zhang joined the conversation to state that behind the tense discussions is an abundance of friendly and collaborative work being done to create better and faster zkEVM engineering.

Although there are still disputes between projects, the highly competitive nature of this market has sparked a fresh wave of innovation in zkEVM technology. It's a reminder that interoperability and collaboration are the best for everyone's progress, although it may not always appear that way on the surface.
