FIFA today unveiled the open beta version of World Cup AI League, an AI-driven soccer strategy game with cartoonish, brightly-colored characters developed by Web3 AI firm Altered State Machine. Different from their counterparts with real-world football stars such as Christiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi, each character of World Cup AI League will have its own strengths and weaknesses which will be controlled by AI, where players act as team coaches and owners. It’s currently available on the Android app, with the iOS launch expected “soon.”

The in-game currency of AI League is not a cryptocurrency like what many cryptocurrency platforms deploy due to Apple and Google’s restrictions. Yet, an NFT marketplace is purportedly still in the pipeline in order to provide casual players a frictionless, unique experience that is not overshadowed by the NFT element. It follows the latest trend of Web3 game developers who launch games in a traditional “Web2” form first and enable NFT elements subsequently.

FIFA, the international governing body of soccer and the firm behind the World Cup, is no stranger to the cryptocurrency space. It has partnered with other Web3 game studios for World Cup-themed integrations, enlisted a crypto sponsor for the 2022 World Cup and launched an NFT platform. It serves as a testament to the growing integration of decentralized technologies into the world’s favorite sport.

AI League capitalizes on the trends of deploying AI and the non-fungible token (NFT) within the gaming industry. Through integrating AI and NFT, AI League proves its capability to provide players a seamless experience that is simultaneously enhanced and secured. Furthermore, FIFA’s embrace of the cryptocurrency world further solidifies its position as a major player within the gaming industry.
