Square Enix, the renowned Japanese game publisher and creator of the iconic Final Fantasy series, has announced a strategic collaboration with the PC gaming platform Elixir. This move has been made with the intention of furthering the adoption of Web3 games to mainstream audiences. Elixir, as a platform, hosts both traditional and Web3 video games and recently expanded its library to include Epic Games Store titles.

Square Enix Director of Business Development Hidaki Uehera commented positively on the partnership in a statement: "This partnership with Elixir Games represents yet another step for Square Enix to explore the promise of Web3-decentralized gaming." He went on to mention that Square Enix has had a close eye on this new type of evolving technology since 2021.

Elixir CEO Carlos Roldan also shared his enthusiasm with the deal and put forward his expectations for this partnership. His view is that it will "bring us closer to Web3 gaming mass adoption". He further noted that the platform will soon be ready for scalability, as the 2023 year has already seen a number of industry leaders enter the Web3 space. These exciting developments are only set to expand as the remainder of the year progresses.

Square Enix have a long history of being open to the possibilities provided by Web3 technology, with the company leading an investment round into the metaverse game The Sandbox in 2020. Subsequently, the Square Enix president Yosuke Matsuda expressed his belief that these crypto game economies are a new technology that’s here to stay. Following on from this sentiment, Square Enix announced its very first Web3 game - Symbiogenesis - in late 2022, which uses the Ethereum scaling network Polygon to underpin its utilization of NFTs.

Elixir, as a platform, seeks to align Web2 and Web3 gaming, offering an array of titles across multiple popular blockchains. These range from MMORPGs like World Eternal Online, to card games such as Raini: Lords of Light and Elemental Raiders, and the ever-elusive secure privacy-based RPG experience in Chronos and Bornless. With the collaboration of Square Enix’s veteran experience and well-renowned name, we can only anticipate even better and more substantial Web3 gaming offerings for our own learning and exploration.
