LimeWire, the popular file-sharing service from the early 2000s, is back in Web3 with the release of its fun and nostalgic music downloading game. Players can go through the virtual version of the old Windows operating system and search for music, movies, and other files from the early 2000s. Every download that does not contain a virus will reward the player with 10 points and eventually result in the players gaining crypto rewards in the form of LimeWire’s upcoming ERC-20 token, LMWR, that is scheduled for launch next month. The game will be available to play until May 15, and the top 1,000 players will be rewarded with 150,000 LMWR tokens.

What sets LimeWire apart from other file-sharing services is that it allows the creators to paywall their exclusive content and generate royalties through the sales of non-fungible tokens (NFTs). Since last year, it has had around 3 million users with $1 million in total volume traded and 20,000 accepted creators. The game makes use of the nostalgia surrounding early 2000s with its simulated experience of the Windows and LimeWire software, allowing users to easily find the music, movies, and other files from the past.

With the game, LimeWire is aiming to introduce Web3 to those who weren't cognizant of the platform during the initial years, thus restoring its fame from the early 2000s. Julian Zehetmayr, co-CEO of LimeWire, said to Decrypt, “Our approach in tapping into nostalgia to promote the new LimeWire was a conscious decision to acknowledge and celebrate our roots. We’ve successfully recreated the early 2000s in a captivating and enjoyable way…” This decision proves to be immensely fruitful as users will be able to enjoy both the nostalgic experience of early 2000s and the new features of Web3.
