Elon Musk, the CEO of tech-giants SpaceX and Tesla, is no stranger to the headlines, especially given his recent efforts to halt AI developments due to concerns. Despite this, the tech mogul recently made another headline when it was reported that he has purchased nearly 10,000 graphics processing units (GPUs) to be used on his newest venture - an artificial intelligence (AI) project at Twitter. This marks a major development for Musk, who only a few weeks ago signed an open letter with thousands of other researchers to temporarily halt AI development due to risk for humanity.

GPUs are typically used for large-scale AI models due to the heavy computation needed from the technology. This news comes after a tweet from Musk on March 18th in which he said that the company would use AI to "detect & highlight manipulation of public opinion" on Twitter. This announcement seems to back up Musk's earlier dedication to the project, but what the exact role of generative AI at Twitter will be remains unclear.

Although the AI project is still in its early stages, according to two anonymous sources familiar with the company, it appears that Musk is committed to the cause and has been recruiting new talent with an extensive background in the AI field. In March, Engineers Igor Babuschkin and Manuel Kroiss joined Musk's team after working with DeepMind, an AI research subsidiary of Alphabet.

The road ahead for Musk and his team to develop an AI infrastructure may be long, but with Musk's passionate involvement and new sources of expertise, the potential for success looks promising. It is unclear whether or not the AI project will be used to satisfy Musk's warning to regulators at an event with the U.S. National Governors Association back in 2017 - to regulate AI research before it's too late. Only time will tell.
