Researchers at BTQ, a startup focused on building blockchain technology resistant to attacks from quantum computers, have proposed an alternative to the Proof of Work (PoW) algorithm. The alternative, called Coarse-Grained Boson Sampling (CGBS), uses quantum technology and light particles to generate unique patterns that reflect the blockchain's current state, replacing the energy-intensive math problems of PoW. While the proposal is theoretically interesting, implementing it would require a hard fork of the Bitcoin network and a transition to quantum-ready infrastructure. This could be a challenging task and may result in a fork similar to the Blocksize Wars of the past.
