Andre Cronje, the founder of Yearn.Finance and Keep3r, has revealed his true motivation for leaving the DeFi sector in 2022. He explained that he was forced to quit due to attacks from the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), who were investigating Yearn vaults as "investment mechanisms." Cronje stated that he had faced scrutiny from regulators for almost two years, with the SEC primarily focused on his income and fundraising mechanisms. He emphasized that he had never earned any fees from Yearn and had never sold anything to U.S. residents. Cronje chose to step away from DeFi due to the constant attacks and the toll it took on his mental health and finances. Prior to leaving, Cronje had released posts on DeFi regulation and had been forced to keep SEC allegations secret. His departure, along with co-founder Anton Nell, caused a collapse in the DeFi token segment. However, Cronje later returned in 2023 with the rebranding of the Fantom blockchain into Sonic, which has since experienced significant growth.
