Pace Gallery Holds First Web3 Solo Exhibit Featuring Tyler Hobbs

On Thursday, the renowned contemporary art gallery Pace opened its door in New York City to welcom the generative artist Tyler Hobbs’ QQL: Analogs, the first show to ever be featured in Pace Gallery under its Web3 art division, Pace Verso. The exhibition showcases 12 physical paintings representing derivations from Hobbs’ famous non-fungible token (NFT) collection, QQL. Moreover, this is a collection that was co-created between Hobbs and the pseudonymous generative artist Dandelion Wist.

At the exhibition’s press preview, Hobbs expressed his exuberance at being able to bring digitally native art to the physical space, thus providing viewers with a more robust experience and appreciation for his work. He remarked that “as a digital artist, you lose control of how people see work, especially when viewed on a small screen” and thus, the creation of “hybrid” works is his way of leveraging the digital realm and expanding on it for the audience’s benefit.

It would seem Call of Duty fans were more brave than NFT investors when it comes to responding to the current crypto winter, because while the market has been in a downturn, interest and purchases of Tyler Hobbs’ digital art have only been increasing. One wallet alone purchased over $900,000 worth of Fidenzas – his most popular NFT collection, released a year prior. Also, he raised an impressive $17 million from selling mint passes for the QQL collection.

Observance of digitally native art being appreciated in the art world is no longer a novelty, as such pieces have been acquired for donation to many of the world’s renowned museums and galleries. Just last February, for instance, NFT issuer Yuga Labs gave out a CryptoPunk to the Centre Pompidou in Paris. Days later, NFT influencer and collector Cozomo de’ Medici donated 22 digitally native works to the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.

The acceptance of digitally native art and digital creativity in the form of NFT is rapidly growing and it is both reassuring and exciting to witness the emergence of a profession that promises to revolutionize the realm of the digital art world and its market potential.
