Police in Jakarta have dismantled a crypto romance scam syndicate that targeted victims on dating apps. The scammers used fake profiles to gain the trust of middle-class women, mostly professionals, and then moved the conversations to WhatsApp where they pitched a fraudulent cryptocurrency trading platform called Wish. The investment schemes promised high returns of up to 25%, and victims were asked to deposit funds via the platform. Authorities have arrested 20 suspects and are searching for one more, believed to be a foreign national from China. This scam is believed to be part of a larger syndicate led by Chinese nationals, and there have been previous instances of Chinese-linked crypto scams in various jurisdictions.
