Shortly before his presidency ended, Donald Trump launched a meme coin called TRUMP on the Solana blockchain, followed by Melania Trump launching her own coin called MELANIA. The launch of these coins caused major congestion on the Solana network as millions of users flooded in to trade the tokens. Chris Chung, CEO of Solana swap platform Titan, stated that the congestion was due to decentralized applications (dApps) rather than the blockchain itself. Despite the congestion, Solana continued to process transactions and maintained network stability. However, the incident revealed the need for dApps to upgrade their infrastructure and be prepared for future high traffic events. Solana is taking steps to increase scalability, with the development of the Firedancer client expected to significantly improve transaction processing capabilities. The launch of the TRUMP and MELANIA coins showcased the appeal of the Solana ecosystem in the cryptocurrency market but also highlighted the importance of dApps ensuring their readiness for similar events in the future.
