Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has highlighted the need to protect individuals from accidental loss of cryptocurrencies, not just theft. He outlined various ways in which people can lose large amounts of crypto, including software bugs, forgotten passwords, and accidental deletions. Buterin believes that wallet security solutions should address all forms of loss, not just cyberattacks. He has advocated for social recovery solutions, which involve trusted individuals assisting in recovering access if the owner loses their private key. Some startups, such as Argent Wallet and Nani Wallet, have implemented social recovery features in their products. The consequences of crypto loss can be severe, as shown by the case of James Howells, who lost 8,000 Bitcoin worth hundreds of millions of pounds when his hard drive was discarded. Despite legal efforts, he has been unable to retrieve the lost cryptocurrency.
