OpenSats, a non-profit organization with a long-term mission to create a free and prosperous digital society, announced today that it has received a generous funding of $10 million from Jack Dorsey’s #Startsmall initiative. This donation is primarily targeted to help strengthen the free and open-source software and projects relating to Bitcoin, Nostr, and other related technologies. Half of the donation will be dedicated to advancing the growing Nostr ecosystem.

OpenSats plans to make full use of the funding to expand its operations, and ensure a continuous supply of funds for the respective open-source projects and protocols. OpenSats also confirmed that all donated funds will be allocated to projects evaluated by the OpenSats board of directors, unless provided for operational purposes. To this end, a part of the donation will also be used to finance OpenSats’ operational budget.

“We believe that open-source software and digital infrastructure are key components to creating a free and prosperous society,” OpenSats said in an official statement. “ We are determined to set up a sustainable and consistent support system that can defensively protect the individual rights and freedoms of users.”

According to the statement, the OpenSats board of directors appointed a committee consisting of Nostr developers and tinkerers to evaluate the contributions made to the respective protocols. The selection of the committee included Nostr creator fiatjaf, Coinkite CEO NVK and Gigi, who joined OpenSats as part of the board. “We are excited to work with industry, the wider free and open-source community and the contributors to establish the freedom tools required for our future,” the statement added.

In conclusion, OpenSats is excited to create a better future with the generous funds from #Startsmall, and is looking forward to what the community can bring.
