In the midst of the bear market, the El Salvador nonprofit program “My First Bitcoin” (Mi Primer Bitcoin) managed to raised over 1 Bitcoin (BTC) in donations. Hundreds of people around the world sent small parts of Bitcoin (Satoshi) over the Lightning Network to fund the expansion of My First Bitcoin’s Bitcoin Diploma program. The crowdfunding campaign was boosted by Bitcoin Beach, who declared their matching donations would be accepted until midnight on April 27th. Lightening generous donations flooded in from people all around the world, including Venezuelans, Poles and Canadians.

The My First Bitcoin program was founded by John Dennehy, who told Cointelegraph that Bitcoin's greatest potential is empowering the individual and making it easy to donate value is a big part of that. Bitcoin is more convenient, cost-efficient and censorship-resistant than former payment services such as PayPal and GoFundMe.

In less than three weeks the donation campaign had reached the 1 BTC mark. This made it the third biggest crowdfunding ever conducted on the Bitcoin crowdfunding platform Geyser. The response was described as “definitely the biggest educational project on Geyser ever” by its founder Metamick, who further commented that it was “insane traction in just a day”.

The Bitcoin community continues pouring enthusiasm into the project as they build up Bitcoin and its associated technologies. As of today, My First Bitcoin has educated over 6,000 students in El Salvador, with the last graduation ceremony held in November 2021.

The progress of My First Bitcoin underscores the potential of Bitcoin to empower those around the world. In the midst of a bear market, the Bitcoin community continues to make strides in education, donation and technological advancement. With initiatives such as My First Bitcoin, the sphere of blockchain projects is becoming more accessible and inclusive.
