Putin, the President of Russia, has stated in the recent meeting of the Council for Local Self-Government Development that the trend towards multipolarity in the world is inevitable and those who do not understand and follow this trend will surely lose. This is an absolutely obvious fact and nothing can be done to prevent it. The Russian Foregn Minister Sergey Lavrov, who was speaking to the participants of the World Online Conference on Multipolarity in Moscow echoed the same view mentioned by Putin about the global trend towards multipolarity. He details some key factors he identified which contributed to multipolarity, in particular the decline of the influence of the G7 countries in the global economy compared to the growing influence of emerging markets.

Moreover, he has also pointed out the role of multilateral associations such as the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation and BRICS, which exhibit a successful model of cooperation of different national and cultural entities through their reliance on independency, state sovereignty and values. Lavrov also added that the United States and Europe’s current action to establish unipolarity will fall through.

Putin has likewise had an esteemed opinion on the failed attempt of unipolarity, as he expressed his thoughts last week that the elites will face a severe repercussion which they have brought upon themselves with their own action. Despite all this, he also proudly mentioned of Russia’s focus on strengthening partnerships with friendly countries and collaboration with foreign partners.

It is therefore conclusive that the trend of multipolarity is one of the main aspects of international politics shaping how the world operates. As stronger and more powerful emerging economies find their footing, this will in turn provide a great opportunity for collective success and prosperity, if managed correctly.
