Despite claims from a number of Twitter-based sources that plans for El Salvador's Bitcoin City - announced by President Nayib Bukele in 2021 - were merely a publicity stunt, Escape to El Salvador, an organization assisting expats in gaining residency and citizenship in El Salvador, declared advanced plans still exist and have simply not been submitted as of yet to the public works ministry for review. The Bitcoin City project aims to create a haven for bitcoiners within El Salvador.

The sudden enthusiasm of President Bukele in 2021 towards BTC can be attributed to the Bitcoin Beach project, established by a small group of surfers who converted the villages into BTC-powered economies. Resulting in the official adoption of BTC as El Salvador's currency in September 2021, followed by the announcement of the Bitcoin Embassy in San Salvador, a month later.

The Bitcoin City project was among several cryptocurrency-related projects which have scaled back or put on hold during the crypto winter. It has started to be recognizable again since Bukele has sought re-election for president, with a supermajority for his Nuevas Ideas Party in the nation's parliament. One sign of Bukele's renewed interest can also be seen in the opening of two international Bitcoin embassies for El Salvador, one located in Switzerland and the other in Texas.

In addition to the well-connected Jeremy, Chief Advisor of Escape to El Salvor, the organization seeks to continue propagating the dream of a Bitcoin-focused economy in El Salvador. The dreams of El Salvador becoming a haven for bitcoiners remain present and active, especially with the support of the nation's leader.
