Kwon, who also goes by the alias “Lanker Kwon,” is accused of trying to enter Montenegro on March 5 under a false identity and was denied entry, according to a March 10 court decision.

The authenticity of the documents allegedly used by Kwon to enter Montenegro is now under scrutiny, according to court documents. Kwon faces up to three years in prison if he is found guilty of falsifying his identity.

The news of Kwon’s impending trial comes just days after it was reported that the Korean-born former executive and several of his associates were being investigated for various fraud-related crimes in multiple countries.

Kwon, who is believed to be traveling in Europe, was the leader of the Terraform Labs project, an effort to create a cryptocurrency-based social network. However, the project soon ran into financial trouble and collapsed in 2020, leaving investors uncertain about the fate of their investments.

The investigations into Kwon centered around allegations that the cryptocurrency fraud he allegedly engineered defrauded more than 150 investors out of $12 million.

Kwon’s court hearing in Montenegro is only the latest development in the ongoing investigations into his activities. In addition to the criminal inquiry into his alleged fraud in South Korea, authorities in France and the United States are also believed to be investigating Kwon and his associates.

The trial in Montenegro on the charge of passport forgery is the first publically known court proceeding Kwon is facing. In the court’s statement dated April 5, 2021, it was announced that this hearing would take place advisedly on May 11 and that the defendant, Kwon Do-hyeong, was aware of the upcoming court date.
