The U.S. government has announced that it will return the Bitcoin seized after the 2016 Bitfinex hack to its rightful owners who were victims of the attack. The value of the recovered assets has increased by 16,618.31% to $11.97 billion from $72 million at the time of the hack. The U.S. government has ordered the funds to be returned in-kind to the victims, and a court has ruled that the government should notify all victims and provide them with necessary information. The recovered digital assets are among the most valuable crypto recoveries in history. Two individuals have been arrested and charged in relation to the hack, and in October 2024, one of them was sentenced to five years in prison for money laundering. Suspicious activity was also observed in the government-controlled wallet where the seized funds were held, but the majority of the funds were returned.
