Crypto security expert Michael Lewellen has filed a lawsuit against the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) over its approach to blockchain code development. Lewellen argues that the government's crackdown on crypto mixers and their developers is flawed and unjust. Federal prosecutors have classified protocols like Tornado Cash as money-transmitting services and accused blockchain developers of writing code that could be misused by criminals. The crypto industry opposes this interpretation, stating that code writers cannot be held liable for creating decentralized protocols. Lewellen's lawsuit argues that the DOJ lacks statutory authority, infringes on the First Amendment, and violates due process. The lawsuit is supported by crypto advocacy group CoinCenter and is part of the industry's effort to protect the right to code.
