Blockchain technologies are rapidly evolving with various architectures taking shape to provide various solutions. Monolithic blockchains like Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Solana handle all the tasks related to transaction execution, data ordering, and verifying information without fail but lack scalability. Modular architecture, on the other hand, helps to split different tasks among multiple blockchains to increase their performance and is quite flexible and upgradable.
Modular blockchains, however, are more vulnerable to network centralization due to the presence of sequence providers, who are responsible for processing and ordering transactions for the chain. A startup called Astria is looking to combat this centralization issue by introducing a novel concept known as “shared sequencing”. Shared sequencing from Astria allows different blockchain networks to utilize a shared sequencer to process transactions in place of a single sequencer. This would help to combat censorship concerns commonly faced by budding blockchain networks.
The startup recently raised $5.5 million from investors Maven 11, 1kx, Delphi Ventures, and Lemniscap. Astria is currently developing “Astria EVM”, a rollup backed by its shared sequencer network which will be part of Celestia’s data availability cluster and bring liquidity into the hub. The company believes that the “shared network will have strong censorship resistance and provide easy deployment of rollups on a shared liquidity layer — while retaining native interoperability between the rollups”.
It is always exciting to witness the emergence of innovative technologies that strive to bring the best of blockchain solutions to the world. Astria’s shared sequencing technology provides a fantastic solution to the centralization problem. It provides the necessary censorship resistance and helps to ensure that the data on the blockchain is secure from manipulation. This could be a great step in the direction of uniting blockchain rollups and creating a more unified blockchain network.
