The Ethereum mainnet Archive Node service, ArchiveNode.io, has announced its intention to shut down its services. The project has claimed that the decision to close is due to its success, as the service has achieved its goal of providing free nodes to developers, researchers and students. ArchiveNode.io was launched in 2017, when there was no infrastructure providing Archive Node access to those who needed it. With the recognition of its efforts, Ethereum Foundation awarded the project $10,000 by way of Amazon Web Services (AWS).

An Ethereum Archive Node is a node on the Ethereum mainnet with an instance of a Ethereum client that is configured to store all the historical data on the blockchain. It serves as a valuable tool for developers, researchers, and other users to access blockchain data that is inaccessible on full nodes. Archive Nodes are much different from full nodes—they do not validate blocks, which means that they can theoretically be built from scratch.

DeFi Dude, the creator of the project, announced their intentions to close down. He stated that “this isn’t a sad ending, but a happy one - we just aren’t needed anymore, and are shutting down. gm and gn". This was in reference to the presence of a vast remote procedure call (RPC) provider market, providing access to the same data ArchiveNode.io offered. Thus, the project has become obsolete.

The success of the project has been the result of a lot of hard work put in by DeFi Dude, as well as the generous AWS credits provided by Ethereum Foundation. The ArchiveNode.io support has aided in the development of countless projects.

Even with the discontinuation of ArchiveNode.io services, the data obtained from the project still stands strong. It has served as an invaluable tool to the Ethereum developers and community members. Thus, the project can look back and be proud of the work accomplished, and the positive results it yielded for the Ethereum community.
