The U.S. Department of Justice has launched a website to collect information from individuals affected by the 2016 Bitfinex hack, in which 120,000 Bitcoins were stolen and laundered. The department is encouraging victims to exercise their rights under the Crime Victims Rights Act and share how they were affected by the hack. The hackers involved in the scheme, Ilya Lichtenstein and his wife Heather Morgan, pleaded guilty to charges of money laundering and conspiracy in August 2023, with their sentencing scheduled for November 2024. The Department of Justice created this website to ensure transparency and give victims a chance to comment before the sentencing takes place.
