Ripple is introducing native programmability to its XRP Ledger, allowing developers to create custom features while maintaining efficiency and security. This update, led by RippleX engineers, aims to expand the blockchain's utility for institutions and developers. The upgrade will introduce "Smart Features," which allow developers to enhance existing functions with their own custom logic. The first feature to roll out under this framework is Smart Escrows, which will allow for more advanced conditions for unlocking funds. This upgrade represents the biggest upgrade to the XRP Ledger since its inception in 2013. Ripple's roadmap also includes plans for an EVM sidechain for Ethereum developers and a focus on institutional DeFi on the XRPL in 2025.
