Joe Zhou, a Web3 enthusiast and crypto entrepreneur, recently fell victim to a phishing SMS message scam related to the Binance exchange. The scammer sent Zhou a message from the usual Binance number, claiming his account was being accessed from North Korea and urging him to transfer his funds to a Safepal wallet. Zhou initially followed the instructions but became suspicious and consulted a friend at Binance, who confirmed it was a scam. Zhou lost only 200U in the ordeal. This type of phishing attack is not new to Binance, as a verified Binance official account had previously warned of a similar attack in 2024. Scammers impersonate Binance, send SMS messages to users, and convince them to transfer funds to a TrustWallet, which the scammers control.
