Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin is encouraging researchers to join the Poseidon cryptographic analysis program. Ethereum is considering switching to the Poseidon hash function to improve its compatibility with zk-provers, which are tools for verifying transactions privately. The goal is to gather more information about Poseidon's security properties before making a decision. A proposal to implement the Poseidon hash function was introduced in 2022, aiming to enhance interoperability between the Ethereum Virtual Machine and zero-knowledge rollups. Poseidon, introduced in 2019, is designed for use in zero-knowledge proofs and is already in use within layer-2 systems on the Ethereum network. Ethereum's exploration of Poseidon is part of its broader efforts to enhance network performance, including the upcoming Pectra upgrade scheduled for April 8.
