German telecommunications giant Deutsche Telekom has announced its plans to release an AI-powered smartphone that aims to position the company as an "AI company" rather than just a network provider. The phone will feature Perplexity's AI assistant as its primary "co-pilot," promising to handle tasks such as booking taxis and answering complex questions without the need for users to switch between apps. Deutsche Telekom's AI push includes collaborations with major players like Google Cloud AI and ElevenLabs, and all these features fall under the "Magenta AI" umbrella. The company hopes to avoid the struggles faced by previous dedicated AI devices by integrating AI capabilities into a fully functional smartphone. The initial rollout will target European markets, particularly in Germany and other central European countries. Deutsche Telekom will also offer selected AI functions through its MeinMagenta app for customers who don't want to purchase new hardware.
