Alexey Pertsev, the developer of Tornado Cash, a privacy-focused cryptocurrency mixer, has been released from prison and placed under electronic monitoring as he continues to fight his conviction for money laundering. Pertsev, a 31-year-old Russian national, was sentenced to 64 months in a Dutch prison last year but has been granted temporary release to appeal his conviction. He announced his release on February 6, stating that while it is not true freedom, it is better than being in prison. Pertsev's case has sparked debates about the legal treatment of privacy-focused crypto developers. He was found guilty of failing to prevent illicit transactions through Tornado Cash, which has been accused of enabling over $7 billion in money laundering.
