The FBI is warning the public about an increasing number of cryptocurrency scams targeting victims through online romance schemes. Scammers create fake identities, gain the trust of their victims, and introduce fraudulent investment opportunities involving digital assets. Victims are directed to professional-looking websites that promise high returns on investment but face obstacles when trying to withdraw funds. Scammers then request additional fees to release the investment gains before disappearing with the money. The FBI advises individuals to be skeptical of anyone promoting cryptocurrency investments, particularly on dating apps or social media, and to independently verify investment opportunities. People who suspect they have been targeted should report the scam to the Internet Crime Complaint Center.
