The parents of deceased OpenAI whistleblower, Suchir Balaji, have filed a lawsuit against the city of San Francisco and the San Francisco Police Department, claiming that the cause of his death was murder and not suicide. The lawsuit alleges that the police department covered up the crime by ruling it a suicide without conducting a thorough investigation. Balaji's parents requested further investigation but were told that the case was closed. The lawsuit demands the release of public documents related to the case and contends that the investigation was rushed and inadequate. A private autopsy performed by a forensic pathologist hired by Balaji's family indicated that the bullet trajectory was unusual for suicide. Balaji had worked for OpenAI and had allegedly helped the company gather data from the internet without permission. The lawsuit also calls attention to the timing of Balaji's death, occurring a week after he was mentioned in a court filing by The New York Times in its lawsuit against OpenAI. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman dismissed the whistleblower's claims and criticized The New York Times' lawsuit against the company.
