The U.S. Justice Department has seized Popeyetools, a cybercrime marketplace, and charged its administrators with selling stolen financial data and facilitating ransomware and fraud. The platform generated $1.7 million in revenue, partly from cryptocurrency payments, and sold stolen credit card data and personally identifiable information. Authorities also confiscated $283,000 worth of cryptocurrency from one of the administrators. The case involved global collaboration and sends a strong message against crypto-enabled crime. If convicted, the defendants could face up to 10 years in prison for each charge.
