The total money lost in crypto hacks in 2025 is approaching last year's total of $2.2 billion, according to data from Blockchain security firm Immunefi. The recent Bybit exploit alone accounts for $1.6 billion of the total. February 2025 saw a significant surge in losses, reaching $1.53 billion, an 18x increase from the previous year. The latest attack, which resulted in the theft of over $1.4 billion worth of Ethereum, has been linked to the Lazarus Group, a state-sponsored hacking group from North Korea. Immunefi reported that total losses in 2025 so far have increased 8x compared to the same period last year. Centralized platforms are increasingly being targeted by hackers, despite their reputation for being more secure than decentralized platforms.
