Blackbird, a restaurant loyalty platform founded by Ben Leventhal, has launched its Flynet mainnet, which allows for on-chain restaurant payments. Flynet is a layer-3 blockchain built on top of Coinbase's Base chain, a layer-2 network that enables faster and cheaper transactions on Ethereum. By utilizing a layer-3 solution, Blackbird aims to eliminate middlemen, reduce transaction costs, and introduce a new model for rewarding diners and partners within the restaurant industry. Blackbird previously introduced a payments platform where users could pay for meals using the platform's native token, $FLY. With the launch of Flynet, restaurants can now use $FLY to pay platform fees, and a new token called $F2 will be introduced for gas fees on the network. Blackbird has raised $85 million in funding, with support from investors such as Andreessen Horowitz, Coinbase, Spark Capital, and American Express. The platform is currently available in New York, San Francisco, and Charleston and has approximately 500 restaurants in its loyalty program.
