A solo miner using a cheap home machine managed to mine a block and earn a reward of 3.125 Bitcoin, worth around $330,000. However, it was later revealed that the miner received additional hashrate support from elsewhere, as the Bitcoin nonprofit The 256 Foundation used the $400 machine and asked miners to send hashrate to their pool. The reward will be used to support the foundation's mission of making Bitcoin and freedom tech accessible to all. While home mining is rare now due to increased network size and difficulty, nonprofits like The 256 Foundation encourage independent miners to participate in the network. Despite the slim chances of mining a block, it provides a tangible way to engage with the Bitcoin network.
