Italian data protection authorities, known as the Garante, have ordered Chinese AI startup DeepSeek to block its chatbot in Italy due to concerns over privacy policies. The company failed to meet regulators' inquiries, leading to the Garante requesting the chatbot to cease operations. Western regulators are wary of DeepSeek's data collection practices, fearing the potential exploitation of foreigners' data for nefarious purposes. The Garante has launched an investigation into DeepSeek's alleged operations in Italy. French, South Korean, and Irish authorities have also expressed intent to probe DeepSeek. DeepSeek claims to have removed its AI assistant from local app stores but denies being subject to Italian rules. While the app is no longer available for download in Italian stores, it remains operational for users who already downloaded it. The Garante previously ordered OpenAI to block its AI chatbot in Italy and imposed a fine for violating EU data privacy rules.
