Former lead infrastructure engineer of Helius, Miles Smith, has accused the founder, Mert Mumtaz, of corporate misrepresentation, workplace toxicity, and sabotaging his career after leaving the company. Smith claims that Mumtaz stole intellectual property from a winning team at a Solana hackathon, engaged in verbal abuse towards a corporate vendor, and misrepresented the technical capacity of Helius. Smith further alleges that Mumtaz obstructed his fundraising efforts for his new startup after constructively dismissing him. The dispute apparently originated from a disagreement over the corporate structure at Helius, where Mumtaz hired a C-team without prior C-level experience. Smith also accused Helius of falling short in technical performance and using paid services to mask their subpar performance. The relationship between Smith and Mumtaz deteriorated to the point where Smith was fired via text message, and it took six weeks to receive his final paycheck. Smith recently revealed that his fundraising attempts for his startup were hindered when potential investors reached out to Mumtaz for references.
