Cencora Inc., a major drug distributor, made a $75 million Bitcoin payment to hackers after a ransomware attack, marking the largest known cyber extortion payment ever. The payment was made in three installments in March after Cencora discovered a data breach in February. The payments were identified by blockchain sleuth ZachXBT, with the funds flowing to addresses with high illicit fund exposure. The hackers, known as the Dark Angels group, initially demanded $150 million. The breach resulted in the theft of personal data, and Cencora reported $31.4 million in expenses related to the cyberattack. Ransomware attacks are on the rise, with ransom payments increasing from under $200,000 in early 2023 to $1.5 million in mid-June 2024. These attacks are targeting larger businesses and critical infrastructure providers.
