The rapid emergence of Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology is causing both opportunity and concern around the world. China recently announced a plan to enforce mandatory review of all AI services prior to public operation. The Chinese internet regulator, Cyberspace Administration of China, stressed that AI services must produce accurate and non-discriminated content, respect intellectual property and not endanger security.

Several companies in China are looking to be leaders in this revolution, such as Baidu Inc., Alibaba Group Holding Ltd., and SenseTime Group Inc., who recently rolled out their latest AI chatbot ERNIE. ERNIE is derived from the Enhanced Representation through Knowledge Integration model. It rivals popular products such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT.

With the development of AI technology, governments across the globe are coming up with a plan to handle its growth sustainably. Japan gave its support for OpenAI’s ChatGPT and even considered incorporating the AI model into governmental systems. Italy, however, temporarily ban ChatGPT after a data breach exposed private user data. Canada is currently investigating OpenAI for allegations of personal data harvesting. Moreover, US President Joe Biden recently addressed tech firms to consider the risks of AI.

Overall, the rise in AI technology has implications for society, national security, and the economy. As such, it is necessary to enforce appropriate laws and regulations that consider all possible ramifications of AI’s mass adoption. While it opens up multiple opportunities, it is important to ensure the safety of users and their personal information.
