Alibaba, one of the world's leading tech giants, is entering into the global race for Artificial Intelligence (AI) with their newest version of ChatGPT, Tongyi Qianwen (Seeking an Answer by Asking a Thousand Questions). Billed as an 'AI solution for conversation,' the Tongyi Qianwen will integrate with other Alibaba products such as DingTalk and Tmall Genie, and is capable of understanding conversations in both English and Mandarin. The product will be able to automatically convert conversations into written notes, draft emails, and create business proposals.

Tongyi Qianwen follows a line of similar chatbots created by other tech companies. Microsoft debuted its own chatbot, ChatGPT, in November 2022. What set this chatbot apart was its Generative AI capabilities, which enables it to answer complex questions and imitate different writing styles. The AI was so advanced it enabled users to create a variety of written content including academic research and movie scripts. Alphabet and Baidu also followed suit with their own chatbots, Bard and ErnieBot, respectively.

The Chinese administration, meanwhile, is amending its guidelines to ensure that AI-generated content is accurate, does not endanger security, and reflects the core values of socialism. According to article four of the CAC guidelines, public feedback was opened on April 11. With the regulations in place, the rollout of Alibaba's AI is expected to be met with approval, as its implications would provide great benefit in the business and academic sectors.
