Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has announced that the upcoming Petra hard fork will double the capacity of layer-2 networks by increasing the blob target from 3 to 6. Blobs were introduced with the Dencun hard fork in early 2024 to enhance scalability. Buterin emphasized the importance of scaling and warned that if Ethereum does not offer it, people will switch to other chains. The Petra hard fork, which includes various Ethereum improvement proposals, was scheduled for a March release but was divided into two. Buterin suggested making the blob target staker-voted to allow for future increases without waiting for hard forks.
