Hackers associated with the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) reportedly lost 46,300 XRP, worth around $121,000, due to an error during a cryptocurrency transaction. The hackers failed to include a destination tag when attempting to deposit the stolen XRP into the OKX crypto exchange. Without this identifier, the exchange cannot determine which account the funds should be credited to. The lost XRP is believed to have been stolen in a prior hack and is part of the DPRK's strategy of using cyberattacks to fund its operations. North Korea has been accused of orchestrating cryptocurrency heists to bypass international sanctions. Hackers linked to the country were responsible for over half of the $2.2 billion stolen from cryptocurrency platforms in 2024. These hackers often pose as IT professionals to gain access to sensitive data and leak it to their accomplices before stealing the companies' reserves.
