Scam Sniffer, a web3 anti-scam platform, has identified a new strategy being used by crypto scammers on Telegram. The scammers are creating fake Telegram groups and impersonating crypto personalities to target users. They use fake Twitter accounts to comment on legitimate posts and invite users to join their Telegram groups. Once in the group, users are prompted to verify a fake OfficialSafeguardBot, which injects malicious code into their clipboard. This code downloads malware that can compromise devices and crypto wallets. The prevalence of Telegram scams has also led to an increase in fake crypto accounts on Twitter. ScamSniffer reported an average of over 300 fake accounts daily in the past week, highlighting the return of the fake accounts problem on Twitter. These scammers have already made millions of victims, with two recent victims losing over $3 million to malicious links. Scam Sniffer recommends avoiding unknown links and software, verifying official channels, and being cautious of time-pressured verification.
