Optimism, a Layer 2 scaling platform for Ethereum, announced Monday that it has set June 6 as the official date for a major upgrade to its mainnet called Bedrock. The purpose of the upgrade is to improve the security and resilience of the OP Mainnet bridge, and to bring a significant decrease in fees. It will also enable backward compatibility and allow for the addition of multiple transactions that can be recorded on the Ethereum blockchain in a single transaction.

The upgrade will require two to four hours of downtime during which transactions, deposits, and withdrawals will not be available in the platform. The Optimism Foundation also stated that users who wish to use the new mainnet will have to spin up a brand new node deployment for Bedrock.

The upgrade is expected to come with many other benefits, such as making it easier for ecosystem developers to contribute due to the minimized complexity and less room for bugs. Moreover, Bedrock is designed with the most minimal diff on Ethereum possible. This should bring benefit for the platform’s overall performance, with the current total of locked assets estimated at $863 million.

Furthermore, the Optimism Foundation has opened a mission control website to keep users updated with the latest news and information related to the upgrade. According to the website, the upgrade will feature changes and bug fixes which includes a security patch that was identified via an audit from Bolt Labs.

The Bedrock upgrade will mark an important milestone for Optimism as the platform focuses on developing Layer 2 solutions for Ethereum with a mission to enable secure and performant off-chain applications. Alongside the upgrade, the platform is likely to attract more interest if it manages to prove its scalability and upgradeability. The coming hours remain crucial as the platform gets set to take the next step towards a better future.
