Elizabeth Warren, the United State senator from Massachusetts is pushing her “anti-crypto” message as a core of her re-election campaign, even though recent polls suggest that most Americans view cryptocurrencies as a revolutionary, innovative technology for the future. Her March 30 tweet suggests it is her goal to promote the idea that the government should be in support of working families, and her tweet included a quote from a Politico headline which directly stated, “Elizabeth Warren is building an Anti-Crypto Army.” This sparked criticism, with YouTuber Coin Bureau dismissing the idea that Warren’s anti-crypto agenda will achieve many, if any votes from the public, and crypto advocate Lord TJ warned that it may “push innovation offshore.”

Despite Neal's rhetoric, reputable polls commissioned by the cryptocurrency industry report that upwards of 76% of those polled agree that crypto and blockchain are essential for moving the financial sector forward. This sentiment was echoed by a November 2022 poll commissioned by digital asset management firm Grayscale Investments. What's more, the survey found that even more Democrats (59%) than Republicans (51%) had faith in the cryptocurrency industry’s future abilities.

The sentiment regarding cryptocurrency wasn’t always this positive, however. In the wake of the BlockFi, FTX, and Terra Luna breakdowns, public trust dropped sharply according to a survey conducted by Morning Consult.

The phrase “Elizabeth Warren is building an anti-crypto army” first appeared in a Politico article published on February 14 of this year. It said that Warren was trying to gain the support of conservative Senate Republicans in order to push her anti-crypto messages. On the same day, Warren proclaimed that she was going to reintroduce a bill she originally proposed as an Anti-Money Laundering tool. This new bill was meant to target decentralized finance (DeFi) companies and decentralized autonomous organizations (DAOs). It was also intended to make unhosted wallets, miners, and validators compliant with AML policies.

Elizabeth Warren’s anti-crypto message has been extremely vocal in her re-election campaign, despite polls suggesting that the majority of Americans agree that cryptocurrency and blockchain technology are essential for a better future. The Senator appears to have taken a liking to the phrase ‘Anti-Crypto Army’ and has included it prominently in her campaign. Polls conducted for the cryptocurrency industry suggest that Warren’s anti-crypto message may not be popular among the majority of the population.
