The Italian government changes its mind: no 42% crypto taxation

The Italian government had initially proposed increasing the taxation on crypto capital gains to 42%, causing backlash from the Italian crypto sector. However, an amendment has been approved by the Budget Committee of the Chamber of Deputies, reducing the initial rate to 26% for 2025 and 33% for 2026, while also introducing a revaluation at 18% and abolishing the non-tax area below €2,000. There is a favorable majority for the amendment's approval, and it is unlikely to be rejected. It is unclear who was in favor of the original increase, with the Ministry of Economy and Finance (MEF) being the only known supporter. Many Italian crypto companies have expressed satisfaction with the outcome and believe it will support the long-term growth of the sector. However, concerns remain about the planned increase to 33% in 2026 and its impact on Italy's competitiveness.
