Super Testnet recently discovered a bug in the Bitcoin Ordinals program, causing a discrepancy between input and output values of the program’s 349272 inscription. The bug was acknowledged by English-speaking Bitcoin maximalists and Super Testnet provided a guide to debug the system. However, debugging it could affect all inscriptions following 349272, putting anyone willing to participate at risk of losing 10,000 sats.

The discovery surfaced right when Bitcoin transactions reached a new all-time high, with 3 million Ordinals inscriptions. This happened mainly with the introduction of BRC-20 token standard, allowing users to issue transferable NFTs through the network, resulting in the meteoric rise of meme tokens and digital artwork collections. Text-based inscriptions outmatched image-based and applications, with 37,000 unique Bitcoin blockchain inscriptions and 371,000 text-based ones.

Overall, the bug found by Super Testnet impacts all Ordinals inscriptions and requires intricate debugging, but Bitcoin maximalists are optimistic about the results.
