Tornado Cash Sanctions Overturned by U.S. Appeals Court

A federal appeals court in the United States has ruled that U.S. sanctions against Tornado Cash, a service that anonymizes crypto transactions, should be abandoned. The court determined that Tornado Cash's smart contracts cannot be blocked under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act, as they are not the property of a foreign entity. The U.S. Treasury Department's Office of Foreign Assets Control had previously sanctioned Tornado Cash, claiming it was used by criminals to launder stolen crypto tokens. Coinbase and other entities had sued the government over the sanctions. This ruling is seen as a significant victory for privacy in the crypto industry.
