Five members of a hacking group called "Scattered Spider" have been charged by federal prosecutors for allegedly carrying out cyberattacks and stealing sensitive data and at least $11 million in cryptocurrency between late 2021 and mid-2023. The group used tactics such as phishing and SIM swapping to trick victims into sharing login credentials and gaining access to their accounts. Unlike many cybercrime groups, Scattered Spider includes members from the U.S. and U.K. The defendants face charges for attacking at least 29 individuals and several companies, including telecommunications companies, IT outsourcing firms, and a cryptocurrency exchange. Approximately $4 million in cryptocurrency has been recovered so far, and the investigation is ongoing to determine the total financial and data losses.
