Cybersecurity firm Kaspersky has exposed a YouTube crypto malware blackmail scheme, in which attackers use the platform's copyright strike system to coerce influencers into adding malicious links to their video descriptions. The hackers leverage the trust built between YouTube influencers and their audiences to distribute malware disguised as tools for bypassing digital restrictions. The malware, known as SilentCryptoMiner, mines cryptocurrencies like Ethereum, Monero, and Bitcoin. Kaspersky has detected over 2.4 million instances of malware installations over the past six months. The report warns that similar tactics could be employed on other social media platforms, and users should exercise caution when downloading software from unverified sources. In related news, blockchain intelligence platform Arkham has launched a feature to track the wallets of influencers with over 100,000 followers, allowing investors to monitor whether influencers genuinely support the tokens they promote.
