The recent incident involving the failed vote to return 700 million ARB governance tokens to Arbitrum Foundation's capitalization was an optimal demonstration of the power of a decentralized autonomous organization (DAO) and the difficulties that come with navigating one. After the proposal had been initially presented, the Ethereum Layer 2 scaling project was eventually forced to backpedal. This event has shed light on the importance of clear communication within a DAO, which was something lacking in this instance.

Leading up to this proposal, according to Arbitrum Co-Founder and Offchain Labs CEO Stephen Goldfeder, a miscommunication had taken place. He noted that this issue was only clear in hindsight, understanding that the DAO is the most decentralized of its kind and that post-discussion, the community is in an even stronger position. Goldfreder also went on to explain that the consultation and debate that arises from DAOs is invaluable, as it is beneficial and often crucial in achieving a positive result.

Technology and community go hand in hand, and it is critical to understand and nurture both in order to make a successful DAO. Without community members that are willing to partake and provide their opinion, the technology is nothing. Additionally, an important element to remember is careful and clear communication, something that was lacking in the Arbitrum incident but is essential in upholding a strong and successful DAO.
