The President of El Salvador, Nayib Bukele, has announced the closure of the country's only pet hospital, Chivo Pets, due to a case of negligence. The hospital, which was created with surplus funds from the country's Bitcoin trust, faced criticism after dogs were mistreated and abandoned in a shelter. The closure of other animal welfare institutions, including the state Animal Welfare Institute and Polipet, was also announced due to similar issues of negligence. Bukele made the decision after receiving numerous complaints on social media about the treatment of dogs in East San Salvador municipality's shelter. The pet hospital was initially opened with the goal of providing care for 200 animals at a low fee of $0.25 per day, funded by the Bitcoin trust earnings. El Salvador has seen a number of failed Bitcoin projects, including Bitcoin City and Chivo Pets. Despite pressure from the IMF to stop buying Bitcoin, the country has continued to accumulate the cryptocurrency and currently holds more than 6,105 bitcoins in its treasury. On a positive note, El Salvador has become a crypto haven, with major crypto firms such as Bitfinex Derivatives and Tether moving their headquarters to the country.
