During the Pectra upgrade on the Sepolia testnet, Ethereum developers had to roll out a "private fix" to address technical issues caused by an attacker exploiting an overlooked edge case. The attacker sent zero-token transfers to the deposit contract, triggering errors and leading to empty blocks on the network. The bug was related to the EIP-6110 and the ERC-20 standard allowed for zero token transfers. Developers were able to fix the issue and resume normal operations. Despite the disruption, the Ethereum network did not lose finalization. The Pectra upgrade is designed to improve ETH staking, scalability, and network capacity with 11 EIPs. The upgrade has been delayed for further testing and debugging.
